Movie titles are important for a film. The very first impression is formed from the title. It lays down expectations and film genre. At first, Flour made me think of the powder used in cooking. But saying flour is the same pronunciation of the word “flower”. And FLOWER is the signature item which must be in each film. Immediately, I’m drawn to watch this film; very clever to choose the title FLOUR.

FLOUR opens with flour being rolled on a counter. The chef looks forlorn and even drinks from a bottle of beer. Matter of fact, he has 8 empty bottles on the counter already.

We cut to a girl in the bathroom vomiting in the toilet and holding a positive pregnancy tester. The next cut is brilliant, showing the chef taking bread out of the oven. Another great play on words. And the girl walking in holding her pregnancy test. She has a smile, but the chef sees the pregnancy tester and his jaw drops.

You have to give John Lamond a lot of credit. Within 20 seconds of the bread coming out of the oven, we went through a range of intense emotions – happiness, pregnancy, sadness, despair, escape. And the beauty of FLOUR is there is no dialogue, this was a silent film, which made us glued to the expressions of the actor and actress.

A great film shot with a length of less than 4 minutes, brought a complete and moving story to the screen. A picture is worth a 1000 words and FLOUR rains some heavy words upon us.
